Focus on Seattletters
Join us as members who attended the International Calligraphy Conference Seattletters which was held in Bellingham this summer show and share the work that they did in class.
There will be a short video presentation of the conference and then members will be free to wander around the tables and view the work and talk to the partcipants.
AGM, Bake Sale and Envelopes
AGM
This is our Annual General Meeting. This is a non-election year! The meeting should be brief. Notification of any special issues will be in the October Bulletin.
Bake Sale
This is our annual Fund Raiser.
Bakers: Enjoy yourselves and bake up a storm. What you make is up to you. Jams, jellies, etc. are great too! Bring your goods for the sale pre-packaged and pre-priced.
Eaters: Isn’t that all of us! Bring cash!!! Why not bring a friend too and they can get some homebaked goods as well.
Envelopes
A number of our members have participated in Envelope Exchanges and have received some wonderful envelopes in the mail. Come and see what they have received and learn a little more about exchanges. Wendy organizes an exchange each January and perhaps you might like to participate next year.
The Krafty Envelope with Brigitte and Rose
Come join us as Rose shares postage tips, handy for the upcoming 2019 envelope exchange.
Brigitte will be sharing her technique for using white gouache and brush pen on kraft envelopes and cards.
We will supply:
White gouache, Kraft envelope, Kraft card, handout

A favourie round brush (size 3 to 6)
Black Brush Pen (Brigitte’s favourite is The Tombow Fudenosuk hard tip which is the one with a blue pen barrel) Don’t have this brush pen? Join us as we ring in the holiday season. Bring a small plate of finger food to share (tea/coffee/punch) will be provided. There will be live piano music and an opportunity to raise your voice in favourite songs of the season. You can take this as an opportunity to give Christmas cards to fellow members if you wish.

WEATHERGRAMS
WITH SHERRY AND WENDY
Please join Wendy and Sherry and learn about the history of weather grams and then make one. All materials will be supplied including the ink. Please bring a writing tool of your choice and a container to hold your ink and a loading brush.
Advance planning: Try writing a ten word or less poem that is generally seasonal or nature related – of course it can be on any topic you like.
There will be a list of poems that you can choose from so don’t worry about having to write one.
SUPPLIES:
Black and Vermillion Sumi will be supplied. Please bring a pen that can be dipped AND/OR Black and Red Felt Pens.
Paper will be supplied.
Have you ever wondered what is the best pointed pen nib for you? Join Wendy at this “Round the Table” session prior to the February meeting. She will have many different pointed nibs for you to try plus a handy chart to keep track of them! This session is FREE, but is limited to the number of people that can fit around a table or two. Please e-mail Wendy if you are going to come.
Dr, Kwakkel is a professor at UBC and will show us how he has examined
medieval letter forms and traced their development over time. Dr. Kwakkel
was previously at the University of Victoria and has done similar talks for the
Fairbank Society. This promises to be an illuminating talk.

Adding Colour to Monoline Romans

We’ll do a quick review of basic Roman capitals and proportions and then we’ll look at a simple technique for adding colour to these letters.
Supplies:
Ruler, pencil, eraser (These are essential for this technique)
Watercolours (Pencils or pan colours)
Water container
One piece of paper that can withstand some water (not printer bond) Arches text wove, hot press watercolour paper , mixed media paper or similar.
Graph paper will be supplied.
REVERSED PIANO–HINGE BOOK
with Heidi Stolp
We will be making a book! Heidi has made covers, spines, tabs, cutting templates and inside pages for a book for each of us. Also provided will be glue, beads, thread and the use of needles.
Supplies to bring:
scissors
bone folder
small watercolour brush
water container
X-acto and small cutting board
ruler
pencil
coloured pencils
a few gel pens and watercolour pencils (only if you have them)
black micron (03-05 or 08) or equivilant waterproof black pen
We should go home with a finished book and might even have some decorating done on our pages!
Calligraphy Card Circle
with Susan King, Sherry Springall and Wendy Cowley
Our Circle will start with demonstrations from the document camera for all to see featuring a few different techniques to use with cards or other art pieces.
After the demo’s stations will be set up so you can choose to try a technique or two – depending on the time. There will also be another station that is self explanatory for making another card.
Our Calligraphy Circle is open for asking questions or for guidance from other members on things you need to know.
