CALLIGRAPHY C IRCLE
A calligraphy circle is a sharing. We would like everyone to participate. The success of this sharing depends on YOU! What do we EACH need to do to make this not only a success, but an opportunity for learning and FUNL
Bring: A project of some sort to work on or not – your choice.
Question: Be prepared to ask questions on how to do something that may
not be working for you. Or ask someone who is working on a project “How do you
do that?” “What tool are you using?”
Advise: Would you like some advice on how to fix your layout or choice of lettering,
ink, colour, etc? Bring your work and let others help you out. This would just be individually or in a small group, not in front of the whole gathering.
Demo and Try Out
There will be various forms of graphite and some sumi ink to try. Do you have something you would like to share? Bring it along and let others try it out. Maybe you have a fantastic …. Demonstrate it to individuals or a small group.
Two Passions: Butterflies and Calligraphy

Ben Shahn Lettering
with Violet Smythe
Ben Shahn (1898-1968) holds a special place amongst American lettering artists of the twentieth century. He was a painter, printmaker and photographer, as well as a creative inventor of letterforms. Let the possibilities unfold!

This year our June Social is a three pronged event.
#1 Black & White exhibition pieces are due and will be put on display for all to admire. Please bring your piece framed (if possible) and complete the form in duplicate.
#2 Visiting and Eating. Please bring something sweet or savoury for our buffet table. Plates, napkins and tea and coffee will be available. Join your fellow calligraphers and find out what they have planned for the summer.
#3. Our first WCS de-clutter event! Our June 27th meeting is your
chance to bring your overstocked artists’ supplies to the tea – things
you know you’re never going to play with again.
Lindsay and Jan will set up 3 groups of tables for your unloveds:
1. You can place them on a table for anything that is free and up-for-grabs.
2. Price them and hope that someone else is looking for that exact same thing (pocket the profit or donate to WCS).
3. Place them in the Trading Post category and negotiate an exchange with another member.
If you have items you want to donate without having to mind the store – Lindsay and Jan will take responsibility for your donations.
Nothing will find its way into the landfill if we can prevent it.
Join us for our Triple Threat Evening: Exhibit, Social and Garage Sale
Bring your pieces for our 2018 Exhibit Black and White. Pieces should be matted and framed. Lindsay has been working hard and we have 3 venues for our exhibit in the next year. Let’s make sure we have a good showing.
As we say good bye to regular meetings for the summer, we celebrate by having more time to socialize with each other. Please bring a small plate of finger food to share. Tea and coffee will be provided.
Three categories for your decluttered goods: Give away, swamp or sell. If you choose to sell, you can choose to give the money to the Society or keep it to buy more supplies for you! Remember, select what you will bring carefully. Throw your junk away, don’t bring it to the sale.
Focus on Seattletters
Join us as members who attended the International Calligraphy Conference Seattletters which was held in Bellingham this summer show and share the work that they did in class.
There will be a short video presentation of the conference and then members will be free to wander around the tables and view the work and talk to the partcipants.
AGM, Bake Sale and Envelopes
This is our Annual General Meeting. This is a non-election year! The meeting should be brief. Notification of any special issues will be in the October Bulletin.
This is our annual Fund Raiser.
Bakers: Enjoy yourselves and bake up a storm. What you make is up to you. Jams, jellies, etc. are great too! Bring your goods for the sale pre-packaged and pre-priced.
Eaters: Isn’t that all of us! Bring cash!!! Why not bring a friend too and they can get some homebaked goods as well.
A number of our members have participated in Envelope Exchanges and have received some wonderful envelopes in the mail. Come and see what they have received and learn a little more about exchanges. Wendy organizes an exchange each January and perhaps you might like to participate next year.
