Envelopes

One of our members, Wendy Cowley, organizes a year long envelope exchange. Each year over 100 calligraphers from around the world send out one envelope each month to a designated recipient. At the end of the year each calligrapher will have sent 12 envelopes–one to each of 12 different calligraphers and received one envelope from each of those 12. In 2009, the participants were asked to send an envelope to Westcoast Calligraphy Society for inclusion on the website.

At our March 2009 meeting our program was on envelopes. Our homework was to do 3 envelopes–one addressed to our Society, one addressed to a fictional character and one addressed to the Genessee Valley Calligraphy Guild. The Genessee Valley group sent us envelopes that they did at their March meeting! One of the techniques we tried was making envelopes out of calendar pages. The second row of envelopes all used that technique.

These are the envelopes that are members did to send to the Genesee Valley Calligraphy Guild. If you look at some of them closely, you will notice that we were concentrating so much on our lettering that our spelling suffered! Some of the postal codes are missing a number because Wendy wrote it on the board incorrectly! We hope they enjoy the envelopes in any case. At their March 2009 meeting members of the Genessee Valley Calligraphy Guild in New York decorated envelopes./ Sixteen of their members decorated envelopes and addressed them to Westcoast Calligraphy Society. These envelopes were done in a short period of time–at a meeting–with limited supplies available. They do not have postage stamps on them as they were mailed in one large envelope.

At the June 2002 meeting, we explored various ways of addressing envelopes as a preview to some of us taking part in an envelope exchange. These envelopes–addressed to our Society–were done that night in less than an hour! Have fun viewing, there is inspiration here!
